Thinking of going to a networking event? Don’t look desperate.
One of the biggest mistakes job hunters make at networking events is spend too much time talking about themselves and what they are looking for, instead of keeping the focus on the person in front of you.
First, find out what they do. The old adage that “no one cares how much you know until they know how much you care” is the primary thought at these events. So, how do you do that?
Use the technique of “Reversing”. That is, answering a question with a question. If you are asked by someone that comes up to you first, “Hey- what do you do?” DON’T answer the question!! Instead, reverse it with something like “Oh, probably not anything as interesting as what you do. What keeps you busy during the day?” Again, the idea here is to keep the focus on them because once you know what they do, you can alter and customize what you are going to say based upon what you’ve learned about them.
